Sterilization of pallets and other wood packaging material


Many important forest pathologies have been caused, in the past, by the transport of goods contained in infested wood packaging material. This has induced the IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention), of the F.A.O. (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) to issue the ISPM15 (International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures) in March 2002.
The ISPM15 contains two approved treatment measures: fumigation by methyl bromide and heat treatment means achieving a wood core temperature of 56°C for a minimum of 30 minutes.
According to the ISPM15, the NPPO's (National Plant Protection Organizations: in other worlds, the local phytosanitary authorities) shall be responsable for the application of the Standard, the inspection of the plants (kilns) and the verification of the heat treatment processes. The NPPO's will issure indications on: number of the temperature probes, type of the probes (air temperature or wood temperature probes) and certification requirements.
Nardi has made numerous laboratory tests to optimize the plants and heat treatment processes, in order to archieve what is requested in the Standard ISPM15.
On the basis of the experiments made by the wood tecnology experts at Nardi the duration of a single heat treatment is approximately 4-7 hours, much depending on the type of plant (heat source: 90°C hot water boiler or direct system by gas or diesel), on the qualntity and quality of the wood material and on the climate conditions outside the kiln. Heat treatment and drying of wood packaging materials are often performed simultaneously.

Electronic controls for the heat treatment

The local application of the Standard ISPM15 changes from country to country: to certify the reaching of the wood core temperature of 56°C for a minimum of 30 minutes, some NPPO's request that the temperature is actually read inside the wood, using a temperature probe inserted into the wood material (using different number of probes), other NPPO's require an indirect measurement of the wood core through the air temperature circulating in the kiln (here too, according to a different number of probes).
To assess, process, display and print these data, the electronioc controls for the drying of the wood can be updatedto be used also for heat treatment according to the ISPM15. For this reason, Nardi has developed a special electronic device HTR. This device reads, records and prints all the data necessary to certify the heat treatment, made in accordance to ISPM15, in order to acquire the IPPC / FAO mark.
In case of a chamber or kiln to be used for heat treatment only, Nardi had developed an electronic device to manage and control the heat treatment cycle: HTC.
This instrument allows, not only to monitor and manage the heat treatment cycle automatically, but also to read, record and print all the necessary data to certify the treatment according to ISPM15, in order to authorise the use of the IPPC / FAO mark.
